Big Innovation, Small Budget, Huge Success!
Barclays US Women’s Initiative Network (WIN) aimed to celebrate Women's International Day 2023 by showcasing influential women from history. Their initial idea was to display these figures on traditional poster boards, but they were open to more engaging and dynamic alternatives.
-
Objective
The primary goal was to create an immersive experience that would emotionally engage visitors and encourage them to reflect on the journey of women from historical times to the present day. WIN wanted the installation to not only educate but also inspire action and deeper appreciation for the contributions of women throughout history. -
Challenges
Space Limitations: The chosen room had an unusual shape and existing displays that could not be altered or removed, including a large 90" TV.
Installation Restrictions: Setup was restricted to the evening before the event, limiting the time available for assembling the display.
Budget and Time Constraints: Initial plans for using holographic technology were over budget and required a lead time that exceeded the project timeline.
Solution Development
Initial Consultation: During the initial discussions, I encouraged the team to envision the desired emotional impact and the visitor journey. This helped shift the focus from traditional displays to more innovative solutions.
Technology Shift: Given the interest in creating a dynamic and immersive environment, I proposed the use of holographic displays. This idea was initially met with enthusiasm.
Content Selection: Barclays WIN selected 15-20 influential women and provided brief descriptions for each to be featured in the holograms.
Space Planning: Given the room’s limitations, I carefully plotted the layout to incorporate the existing elements into the design, thus turning potential obstacles into features of the display. For instance, the large TV could be used to run a continuous loop video or interactive content supporting the holographic displays.
Budget Adjustment and Alternative Solutions: when encountering budgetary and time constraints with holographic technology providers, I sought alternative solutions. We explored less expensive holographic display techniques and the possibility of self-producing the activation as opposed to working with event production agencies.

Implementation
Innovative Use of Space: We used the unique room shape to create a guided path through the displays, leading visitors on a historical journey. The existing 90" TV was incorporated to showcase a documentary-style video about the women featured.
Purcashed Technology for reuse: To adhere to budget constraints while maintaining a holographic effect, we self-produced the experience. This involved:
Purchasing our own in-house holographic fans that can be used for multiple activations.
Learn how to design for holographic fan technology
Learn how to work with holographic fan technology
Teach and use in-house staff to install the activation
Evening Setup: The installation team was prepared with all necessary components to efficiently set up the display the evening before the event, ensuring everything was ready for the next day.

Results
The event was successful, with attendees reporting a powerful emotional and educational experience. The innovative use of technology and space provided a fresh perspective on the historical contributions of women, making the journey from the past to the present a memorable one. Feedback highlighted the effectiveness of the holographic displays in creating a strong visual and emotional impact. Conclusion
This project demonstrated how creative solutions could overcome physical and budgetary constraints. By adapting technology and rethinking traditional display methods, Barclays WIN successfully celebrated Women's International Day in a memorable and impactful way. This activation underscores the importance of flexibility, innovation, and strategic planning in event design and execution.
